All the action in the book takes place in Cochin, a fictionalised version of the town of Kochi, a port city in Kerala, India.
The locations below are fictitious or used fictitiously for dramatic effect.
THE SEA QUEEN HOTEL
Cochin's premier five-star hotel.
Located on the Point at the northern tip of Willingdon Island, the Sea Queen is the go-to destination for luxury. Including a fabulous Saturday afternoon High Tea. Interrupted by an outbreak of delirious dancing.
MATTANCHERRY POLICE STATION
The base for our main character, Sub-Inspector Vasanth Nair. Just north of the Spice Market on Fort Cochin Island. The man in charge is Nair's boss, the corrupt Inspector Kurien.
THE BANKS OF THE MIGHTY PERIYAR RIVER
The backwaters of Kerala, lush, verdant and a hideout for criminals of all dispositions.
ST. DAVID'S LANE IN UPMARKET KACHERIPADY
Who lives in the grand house at the end of the lane? Why such huge gates? And why have none of the neighbours ever seen the residents?
Something washes up on the beach near the lighthouse. A clue, or a dead end? And I mean 'dead'.
SMILEY SILKS: ULTRA-MODERN LUXURY SARI RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT.
An honest business? Or a cover for something altogether more nefarious?
THE OLD SPICE MARKET, JEW TOWN, FORT COCHIN,
A trading hub for centuries. And that includes all kind of trade.
